Morgana MacVicar & Fayann Schmidt

Fayann and Morgana in their studio

Fayann Schmidt is a thrower of pots and creates the forms and molds. Morgana MacVicar then paints them in the Majolica (or Maiolica) style.

Majolica has a long folk tradition dating back to its Moorish influence in Spain and Italy during the 13th century.  It first appeared on the Isle of Majorca in Spain and later in Italy where it was to become a premier decorative art form.  In the following centuries it spread in popularity and production throughout Europe.  Majolica became known as Faience in France, Delftware in the Netherlands, and Fayence in Germany.  A highly collectible form was produced in Victorian England.  Today Majolica is experiencing a contemporary renaissance due to its colorful charm and spontaneous and original style.
